ABOUT FLORIDA BUILDING CODE

& MIAMI-DADE VOLUNTARY PRODUCT APPROVAL:

Both the Florida Building Code & Miami Dade Product Approval Systems are Voluntary. Read Questions 6 & 7 on the Florida Building Code’s FAQ page shown in this link about the  VOLUNTARY FBC Product Approval Process. There is no Florida State Law nor Federal Law requiring hurricane protection products purchased by homeowners to be either Florida Building Code or Miami-Dade approved. In an August 8, 2008 article in the Naples, Florida Daily News, Florida Building Commission’s Management Analyst Azhar Khan said:

“Lack of Florida Building Code Approval doesn’t necessarily imply anything negative about the product. Approval is optional, you don’t have to have it in order for your product to be good,” Khan said. “The quality of the product always depends on the manufacturer, but you can’t really make a house ‘hurricane proof’ without making it a lead bunker.”

Due to the Florida Building Code & Miami-Dade N.O.A. requirements that “approved” hurricane shutters must be bolted onto the structure, Storm Stoppers® are neither Florida Building Code nor Miami-Dade approved. Bolted-on hurricane shutters present a tremendous safety hazard. Since 2004, almost a dozen homeowners have died in fires, when they couldn’t go escape through the windows. You can read these  “Hurricane Shutter Tragedies” here.
