ABOUT FLORIDA
BUILDING CODE
& MIAMI-DADE VOLUNTARY PRODUCT APPROVAL:
Both the Florida Building Code &
Miami Dade Product Approval Systems are
Voluntary.
Click here to read about the
VOLUNTARY FBC Product Approval Process. There is no Florida State Law nor Federal Law requiring
hurricane protection products to be either Florida
Building Code or Miami-Dade approved. In an August 8
article in the Naples, Florida Daily News, Florida
Building Commission’s Management Analyst Azhar Khan
said:
“Lack of Florida Building Code Approval doesn’t
necessarily imply anything negative about the product.
Approval is optional, you don’t have to have it in order
for your product to be good,” Khan said. “The quality of
the product always depends on the manufacturer, but you
can’t really make a house ‘hurricane proof’ without
making it a lead bunker.”

Due to the Florida Building Code & Miami-Dade
N.O.A. requirements that “approved” hurricane shutters must be bolted
onto the structure, Storm Stoppers® are neither Florida Building Code
nor Miami-Dade approved. Bolted-on hurricane shutters present a
tremendous safety hazard. Since 2004, almost a dozen homeowners have
died in fires, when they couldn’t go out the window exits. You can read
these “Hurricane Shutter Tragedies”
above. If you read the Florida Building
Code “Egress Standards,” you will find that the Code only requires 1
“Safe Exit” in the entire house. Imagine waking up in a house full of
smoke and trying to find that solitary exit. Also worth watching is the
“Defeating Hurricane Glass” video. This is a Training Video by the Palm
Beach County Fire Department showing the special tools and protective
safety gear firefighters need to use to break through a hurricane
glassed window.
